Standing on the shoulders of nerds

Isaac Newton once famously said that, "If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants." Well, developing a website is a little like that - you rely on the hard work of all the underpaid, over-worked developers who go before you. So, I'd like to give a warm hand to...

Incorporated Software

  • I developed this website using a brilliant open-source CMS called Umbraco. Thanks to Niels and all the Umbraco crew and community - you are awesome!
  • The blogging engine is based on Blog4Umbraco (developed by Tim Geyssens, Niels Hartvig and Per Ploug Hansen) and which I've modified for my needs.
  • This website also makes extensive use of the ubiquitous, and totally essential, jQuery JavaScript library. $("p.neat").addClass("ohmy").show("slow");
  • I've incorporated reCAPTCHA in my forms to help prevent nasty green eggs and spam.
  • The internal site-search engine is something I wrote based on the fantastic Lucene.NET indexer.
  • I make good use of the jCarouselLite, ColorBox and jPlayer jQuery plugins - thanks guys!
  • The whole website was developed in ASP.NET and the C# programming language developed by those lovely people at Microsoft.
  • Flickr and YouTube for saving my bandwidth.
  • I've incorporated the modified version of the original WMD Editor into my blog. I used MarkdownSharp to transform the markdown output back to HTML. Thanks to StackOverflow for the heads up and work.
  • I've also developed an Open Calais plug-in for Umbraco to automatically generate metadata from blog posts, which I use in this site.
  • Inline code syntax-highlighting is provided courtesy of the Prettify javascript library.
  • Experimental geo-IP stuff courtesy of the fantastic geoPlugin service.

Tools of the Trade

  • The HTML, CSS and JavaScript was hand-crafted using a variety of tools, mostly Visual Studio and Notepad++. I'm old fashioned and like to write (X)HTML by hand, not using tools.
  • I use Opera as my web browser of choice because it's fast, feature-rich and standards compliant. Try it!

Inspiration

In no particular order...

  • Eric Meyer - a genius and inspiration in the field of CSS and HTML.
  • The StackOverflow website - for being a true font of knowledge on all things programming.
  • The ColourLovers website for being a design inspiration and for spelling 'Colour' correctly.
  • CSS Zen Garden for opening my eyes as to what is possible with CSS and HTML.

Copyright

  • All programming, images, music and design © Dan Booth except were stated otherwise.
  • However, feel free to use any of the design or JavaScript for this site as a template for your own, if you so wish. It would be nice if you gave me a link back to this site if you find anything useful here, but that's up to you. Let's try and keep the web open and free and share ideas and get naked! Well, maybe not the naked bit.

We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true.
